Canmore Eagles forward Alex Young was presented with the Athletic Academic Award, sponsored by the Lafarge Exshaw Cement Plant. The 17-year-old from Calgary received the honour at the Eagles’ annual Award’s Dinner on Friday, February 23
at the Cornerstone Theatre in Canmore.
Young is in his second season with the Eagles. He earned an NCAA Div. 1 Scholarship at Colgate University for the 2020- 21 season. Young also earned the Leading Scorer Award, scoring 34 goals and adding 40 assists for a total of 74 points this season.
“Although grades 11 and 12 can be challenging, especially when moving to a new town, Alex met the challenge head on and achieves well above average grades, while at the same time playing hockey. Besides holding daily team practices and dryland training, the team is often on the road. This has not deterred Alex, as he is able to stay up-to-date on his course work and immediately makes up any missed assignments. Alex organizes his time well and is able to focus on his studies and play at a high level,” said Deb Sellers, teacher, Canmore Collegiate High School.
